Welcome to Shanan’

September 19, 2007

Welcome to Shanan’ (pronounced “shaw-nan'”). This is the official “unofficial” blog of the children’s ministry at First Baptist Church of Columbia, SC. The purpose of this blog is to inform, inspire, and educate the parents of First Kids’ children. Your comments are welcome and discussion is encouraged! Be looking in the days ahead for blogs posts from all four members of the First Kids ministry team.

The name of this blog is the Hebrew word that means, “to teach dilligently.” It is found in the following passage of Scripture:

“You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently (shanan) to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” (Deuteronomy 6:5-7 ESV).

As parents of children, we are instructed to love God with our entire being – wholeheartedly. Upon doing this we are then, out of the love of God that flows from our heart, to likewise dilligently instruct our children God’s Word. We do this in every facet of our lives – when we talk, when we rest at home, when we travel, when we take them to sporting events, when we go to the supermarket. Children need to not only hear what they are supposed to believe, they are to see it through their parents. What a huge responsibility!

Thankfully, God has chosen each of us who have children to be His vessels to teach dilligently his children about His plan of salvation for their lives. What a privilege and a blessing that is!

We at First Kids hope that this blog can be a blessing to your life as you continue on your journey as a Christ-follower.
